At a recent conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Julie B Beck spoke of the Relief Society's founding in 1842 as a mobilization of "the collective power of the women and their specific assignments to build the Lord's kingdom." This was a far cry from her previous speach in which she urged women to hasten and not limit their child bearing, and spoke of the virtues of good housekeeping.
As reported in the Salt Lake Tribune, Beck called up memories of pioneer women who faced persecution, traveled across oceans and unforgiving ground, buried husbands and children, "because the fire of their faith burned in their souls." She gave credit to Relief Society women who bolstered and inspired her, when Beck's own mother was living outside the country. And she encouraged women, all women, to seize opportunities for service. "Thousands upon thousands of you who do not currently have a husband or children are an incredible reservoir of faith, talent, and dedication. . . Relief Society needs you." And, to the new arrivals coming out of the Young Women Program, she added, "I have seen how your hearts yearn to make a difference for good in the world. . . We simply cannot afford to squander your youthful and energetic power."

Jeff Beck Nominated for 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
One of the most influential guitarists in rock and roll, Jeff Beck, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, as a member of the Yardbirds. After his 18-month stint (1965-66) in that band, he formed the first edition of the Jeff Beck Group (1968-69, with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood). In the four decades since, Beck’s work has encompassed deep explorations into instrumental jazz fusion, blues, a tribute to Gene Vincent, and much more, always underpinned by his hard-rock roots.
Now, Jeff Beck has been nominated for 2009 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his own right. Other nominees are: Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Metallica, Run-D.M.C., the Stooges, War, and Bobby Womack. Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Ceremony on April 4 2009 at historic Public Hall in Cleveland. For the first time, tickets to the ceremony will be made available to the public.
To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year’s nominees had to release their first single no later than 1983.
More info at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Beck Fellowships Application Deadline Approaches
Outstanding Lamar University undergraduates have less than a month to apply for the university’s most prestigious student awards, the David J. Beck Fellowships. Applications for this new fellowship will be accepted through Oct. 1. The inaugural Beck Fellow will be named in November.
Beck Fellows will receive full academic scholarships to Lamar University for one year covering all tuition, fees, books and on-campus room and board. Additionally, fellows will receive up to $10,000 for summer projects, which may include research, travel, an internship or some other pursuit to help them achieve their personal and professional goals.
The David J. Beck Fellowships were made possible by a $1 million gift from distinguished alumnus David J. Beck. A former regent of the Lamar University System, Beck is a founding partner in a premier Houston law firm, Beck Redden & Secrest. A Port Arthur native, he credits Lamar University with giving him the opportunity to attend college and gain a foundation for future success.
Application packets are available in the offices of the senior associate provost (Plummer 104), Honors Program (Honors Building) or each college dean. For more information, visit lamar.edu/beckfellowships or call (409) 880-8400.
